【The Global Gramophone EP3】(Don’t) Dial 999 – Thatcher-era British Black Music

In this episode of “The Global Gramophone”, we will talk about Britain – a country that most of us are familiar with – from an oft-neglected angle, that of British black music and Britfunk. The UK has a black population of roughly two million, or 3% of the total. Yet the contribution of the black community to British culture far exceeds 3%! Most of the black community had arrived in the UK between 1948-71, yet they have been the subject of socio-economic oppression and were constantly targeted by the law enforcement agencies. Thatcher’s own racist attitudes and right-wing economic policies are also regarded as having also worsened the situation. The British black community were deeply involved in the left-wing struggle against Thatcher in the 1980s, and also made deep contributions to the emergence of New Wave music, and even heavy electronica in the UK! In this episode, we are bringing you the voice of the British black community from one of the most turbulent eras of the country’s history.
Due to copyright concerns we have had to prune several songs. To listen to all of the songs, especially Beggar & Co’s “Somebody Help Me Out” and Spandau Ballet’s “Chant No.1”, please go to the appended playlist.
