Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), a member of House Oversight and Government Reform and Natural Resources Committee and a member of Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus sat down with Voice of America (VOA) reporter Peggy Chang to discuss his thoughts on President Trump’s first year and his immigration reform proposal. Congressman Gomez evaluated President Trump’s first year and said he thinks he is doing terribly, including doubling down on his campaign rhetoric that’s divisive in nature, trying to repeal and replace Obamacare, and implementing immigration policies that’s taking away legal status from DACA recipients and TPS recipients. Congressman Gomez opposed the border wall and he said our country is a country of immigrants, people from all over the world believe if they work hard, believe in our ideals, you can be an American, but President Trump goes against this. He said also the border wall is a waste of money and simply doesn’t work. He also opposed the immigration reform proposal President Trump recently proposed. Congressman Gomez said our immigration system is not picking and choosing the countries you prefer, it’s about allowing people to reunify with their families. He said this proposal is legislative extortion, and he said President Trump’s trying to hold DACA recipients hostage in order to implement what he called xenophobic policies. He said he will oppose any reform that moves away from family-based reunification. Congressman Gomez represents Chinatown, Koreantown, Little Tokyo in Los Angeles and he said his East Asian constituents care about issues what everyone else cares about, including healthcare, transportation, jobs, trade, and housing. Congressman Gomez also talked about how protecting the environment is also good for the economy. He said President Trump’s decision to pull out of Paris climate agreement is short-sighted. As the Chinese New Year is around the corner, Congressman Gomez used Cantonese he learned from his constituents to wish VOA audience a very happy Chinese new year.
