福州市（闽东语：福州市，平话字：Hók-ciŭ-chê，实际读音：/huʔ˨˩ tsiu˥˧ tsʰei˨˦˨/[福州话读音]），别称 闽都、榕城，是中华人民共和国福建省的省会，位于福建省东部的闽江下游及沿海地区，是福建省的政治、文化、交通中心。当地居民以福州族群为主，母语为闽东语福州话。福州建城于公元前202年，迄今2,200多年，是中国国家历史文化名城，在历史上长期作为福建的政治中心，既是中国东南沿海重要的贸易港口和海上丝绸之路的起点城市之一，也是重要的文化中心，是中国东南沿海重要都市、东部战区陆军机关驻地、二线城市。地理上，福州地貌属典型的河口盆地，盆地四周被群山峻岭所环抱，其海拔多在600~1,000米之间。

福州曾获“中国优秀旅游城市”、“国家历史文化名城”、“全国文明城市”、“国家森林城市”等称号。福州是改革开放中14个对外开放的沿海港口城市之一，海上丝绸之路门户以及中国（福建）自由贸易试验区三片区之一。福州也是近代中国最早开放的五个通商口岸之一。福州马尾是中国近代海军的摇篮，中国船政文化的发祥地，诞生了萨镇冰、萨师俊、林泰曾和陈绍宽等重要海军将官。

福州的习俗、文化、传统艺术、建筑形式都自成风格，具有强烈的地域特征。自宋代起福州的文化教育就极其发达，进士、文武状元、两院院士的产生数量在中国城市中名列前茅。福州还是600多万海外华人的祖籍地，为福建一大侨乡，其主要移居地为日本和美国。

Fuzhou (/fuːˈdʒoʊ/; Chinese: 福州; pinyin: Fúzhōu, Fuzhounese: Hokchew, Hók-ciŭ), alternately romanized as Foochow, is the capital and one of the largest cities in Fujian province, China.[5] Along with the many counties of Ningde, those of Fuzhou are considered to constitute the Mindong (lit. Eastern Fujian) linguistic and cultural area.

Fuzhou lies on the north (left) bank of the estuary of Fujian’s largest river, the Min River. All along its northern border lies Ningde, and Ningde’s Gutian County lies upriver. Its population was 7,115,370 inhabitants as of the 2010 census, of whom 4,408,076 inhabitants are urban representing around 61.95%, while rural population is at 2,707,294 representing around 38.05%. As of 31 December 2018, the total population was estimated at 7,740,000 whom 4,665,000 lived in the built-up (or metro) area made of 5 urban districts plus Minhou County. In 2015, Fuzhou was ranked as the 10th fastest growing metropolitan area in the world by Brookings Institution. Fuzhou is listed as No. 20 in China Integrated City Index 2016’s total ranking, a study conducted by National Development and Reform Commission.

Fuzhou is also a major city for scientific research, appearing in the global top 100 cities as tracked by the Nature Index.[9] The city is home to several major universities, notably Fuzhou University, one of China’s key universities and other public universities, including Fujian Normal University and Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University.
