News:
Rich people are buying passports for countries with low rates of coronavirus. This lets them travel without visas, enter countries that have banned visitors and live in safer places.
A number of countries have citizenship-by-investment programs (#CIPs), which let people gain citizenship by putting money into the local economy.
Henley & Partners, a business in London that helps people use CIPs, said it had a 42% increase in the number of people applying for citizenship in the first three months of 2020 compared to the last three months of 2019.
Caribbean countries offer some of the cheapest CIPs. For example, citizenship in #Dominica or St. Lucia costs only $100,000.
Nuri Katz of #ApexCapitalPartners, another company that helps people buy passports, told #CNN that there’s a feeling that small countries will be able to manage the virus better than large countries. This has led to increased interest in the healthcare and lifestyle of small nations.
Some countries don’t offer citizenship, but will give people a visa if they pay enough money. For example, an investment of about $2 million in #NewZealand, which has had more success managing COVID-19 than many other countries, would let someone live and work there.
One Italian #millionaire explained to #RobbReport that he wasn’t happy with how his government managed the pandemic. “We want to know there is a safe place, with good medical services, that the whole family can go to at short notice if we need to,” he said. “Only citizenship can guarantee that.”
